Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication to help you feel relaxed and calm. The medication is typically taken by mouth about an hour before the procedure, and patients remain conscious and able to communicate with Dr. Lozano during their appointment. However, most people remember little to nothing about their visit.
This form of sedation is an excellent option for those with dental anxiety or phobia of the dentist’s office. Since it can take several hours to wear off, it’s important to bring a trusted friend or family member with you to the appointment (they will need to drive you home afterward.)
Nitrous oxide is commonly known as “laughing gas.” It’s an extremely light form of sedation that is inhaled through a soft, small mask over your nose. The gas is fast-acting and helps you feel calm and relaxed throughout the duration of your procedure.
One of the advantages of nitrous oxide sedation is that it has a very short recovery time. Patients are typically able to drive themselves home following the procedure because of how quickly it wears off. It’s also safe for all ages and can be used during nearly any dental procedure.
IV sedation involves the use of sedative medication delivered intravenously through a small IV line in your arm. The medication is precise and works quickly. Our patients remain semi-conscious during the procedure but are often unable to recall it afterward because of the amnesic effects of the medication.
This form of sedation is recommended for lengthy or complex dental procedures or for those with severe dental anxiety.
