How to Properly Maintain Dental Implants

How to Properly Maintain Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of many options patients have when it comes to replacing missing teeth. Dr. Robert Lozano and his team at RB Dental Excellence believe that many patients will find dental implants to be a great solution for their unique needs. These restorations are titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone during oral surgery and function as a natural tooth root. There are many restorations that may be placed over the implants, including dental crown, bridges, and dentures. With dental implants, Rancho Bernardo area patients can replace one or more teeth for a lifetime!

How to care for dental implants

The easiest way to keep dental implants in place and functioning is to treat them just like you do your own teeth. Dental implant maintenance doesn’t require any particular care or attention, but are still susceptible to bacterial decay and infections such as periodontal disease. Dental implants can allow bone to grow around them, but this bone can shrink due to gum disease and cause dental implants to fail. Our team at RB Dental Excellence in San Diego, CA will educate patients on the importance of post dental implant care to maintain their restorations for a lifetime whenever possible!

Do my dental implants need any special care?

Dental implants themselves are underneath the restoration and the abutment. The parts of the dental implant vary depending on how many teeth a patient is replacing. For example, patients who are using a dental implant to support one side of a dental bridge will still need to brush and floss carefully around the bridge to make sure food particles do not become stuck under the bridge. Patients with a dental crown over the dental implant will also need to take care in flossing and brushing around the crown at the gumline. When patients have dental implants placed at RB Dental Excellence, Dr. Robert Lozano and his team can educate patients on what they need to do to ensure their implants stay in place over the years.

What is the process of obtaining a dental implant?

Patients who are interested in dental implants often don’t realize the time needed to place them from start to finish. The entire process can take several weeks and months. However, once they are in place and properly cared for, they can remain in the smile for decades. Patients first consult with Dr. Robert Lozano to find out if they are a good candidate for implants. The best candidates are adult patients who have sufficient bone in the jaw to support the implant and reduce the risk of failure. Then, planning takes place where our dental team takes x-ray images of the jaw to decide the best placement angle for the implant. Patients schedule oral surgery, during which the dentist in Rancho Bernardo places the implant into the jaw. Time is needed for the bone to wrap around the implant and hold it in place before a restoration can be used on the abutment of the implant. Once the final restoration is in place, the process is complete and patients can laugh, smile, and talk to others with confidence they may have lost with their natural teeth.
